Biya Sets 22nd March for the Reruns of 2020 Annulled Parliamentary Election in the Anglophone Crisis Hit Regions of Cameroon, Two Weeks Campaigns Begins Officially on Monday 9th

Cameroon's Biya decrees March 22 for annulled polls in Anglophone zone

Cameroon president Paul Biya on Friday issued a decree announcing a new date for annulled legislative polls in parts of the restive Anglophone region.

The decree read in part: “The electorate of the following constituencies is convened on 22 March 2020 to elect Members of Parliament…” It went ahead to list 10 constituencies in the North-West and Lebialem, the sole affected constituency in the South-West.

The Constitutional Council in late February nullified the results of legislative elections in the 11 constituencies. The long delayed vote was held on February 9, 2020.

The Constitutional court cited a number of irregularities during polls. According to the ruling, voting in the constituencies were not free and fair due to clashes between separatists and government forces which led to low voter turnout.

A senior member of the opposition Social Democratic Front party, Mbah Ndam said he was pleased with this decision which proves that all was not well in the regions during the election.

Despite the cancellations, the ruling Cameroon’s People Democratic Movement won a landslide victory, according to results released by the election body. 

As we report, with date set for the Reruns of Annulled results, there are no prospects this time for a free and a fair run of election in these two regions still. Since the condusive environment has still not been created by Gov't to ease and secure movement of voters from the opposition bench to polling stations and back. All because of insecurity and a likely stage managed cross fire on that day by separatist fighters against Republican forces. Hence victory is still very much assured to the rolling party officials (of thet CPDM) who under any serious circumstance, will gainfully make use of the situation to pick their crown knowing the risk involved.

The long and the short story from all observation, there was no need for the opposition to go about petitioning unless otherwise they were trying their luck to see if they can benefit from some accrued Presidential consideration to meet an expectation or a target. Which may likely be offered to SDF for the share sake of exercising in full swings the democratic axises of the country or the share sake of democratic consideration in parliament.
