Cameroon has one of the best laws on nature
conservation and protection proposed summarily by the Ministry of Forestry and wildlife
voted by parliament and fairly implemented by forest guards and officials of urban
development and environment.
This is because of too much laisse faire
and the lack of enforcement measures or effective follow up mechanism to over
see the rigorous control and monitoring of uncultured actions to nature’s
gifts and environment.
The units and brigades, forest check posts
and agents are all there but the work is not effective because of corrupt road
side or check point practices or services. That is why the rain forest around the
Littoral Region of Cameroon is almost rendered bare by clandestine timber merchants,
yet we have forest guards all over and laws controlling the felling of trees. By
doing so, the surface area of the forest reserve is rendered bare, and the routine
and regular rain falls in this area is altered or hampered seriously.
Coming to the North West Region there
is serious outright tree felling in Awing, Mendankwe and Oku, for firewood, coal
and wood works. Serious wood business has emptied all the forest reserves of the
Region, and their precious gifts to the detriment of water resources, games, the environment
and climate or weather.
Urban development and it’s unstructured
plan, plus bad water drainage patterns and the lack of a proper waste disposal plan
or system, poses as a major problem or threat in most Cameroon cities caused by
neglect and the lack of effective control. Not to talk of those building in danger
risks zones because of land exhaustion and the lack of space at the mercy of all type of land slides and unprecedented
deaths. The 2019 land slide in the West Region
that took away almost 50 lives at once, is a living example. The countless accidents
along Dschang, Melong stretch because of weather are typical examples, cases or
situations that has arose from the non respect or the strict or rigorous implementation
or the enforcement of laws on nature and the environment to safeguard mankind.
The laws are there to control nature’s
gifts and exhaustion, plus man’s excesses but not well implemented or enforced.
Hence, equity, amnesty and justice is not
done to weather or nature. What certainly leads to climate change imbalance or injustice.
